The tall softener tank contains special resin beads whose surfaces attract hardness "ions." These particles cling to the resin's surface and stay there until they are flushed down a drain during the regeneration process.
The regeneration cycle performs an "ion exchange." It is the simplest and most natural means to soften water. Unwanted minerals are removed from water without using chemicals. You'll feel the difference with your first bath or shower!
Water hardness is actually dissolved rock! Calcium and Magnesium can cause scale build-up in pipes and hot water tanks, and cause laundry to come out stiff and gray. When iron is present, sinks, fixtures and clothes can be stained or ruined. It takes more energy and cost to heat hard water, plus you can use twice the amount of soaps, detergents, shampoos and related products compared to soft water.
Soft water can prevent soap build up and can give skin and hair a silky look and feel. Clothes are brighter and last longer without deposits trapped in their fabric. Water pipes and appliances run more efficiently without scaling.
The Regeneration Cycle
After a period of time, the resin beads need to be "regenerated." A brine solution saturates the resin tank and drives off the hardness particles collected on the resin beads. This is how it works:
Backwash: The control valve directs a reverse flow of water through the resin tank, separating the resin beads and flushing any accumulated particles to a drain.
Brine & Rinse: The control valve directs the brine solution (from the short salt storage tank) downward through the mineral tank, driving off collected hardness ions and replenishing the resin beads with sodium ions. The tank is then rinsed to remove excess brine from the resin tank.
Brine Refill: Fresh water is put into the salt storage tank to create a new brine solution for the next regeneration.
Service: The control valve returns to its normal operating position to convert hard water into luxurious soft water.

What is Water Hardness? |
Effects of Hard Water:
- Soap scum buildup on bath fixtures and tub. Soap reacts with hard water minerals leaving an ugly white residue which is difficult to remove.
- Shampoos and soaps won't lather causing soap buildup in hair and clogged skin pores. The results are dry, dull lifeless looking hair and skin.
- Hard water spotting on glasses and dishes - white residue build-up in dishwasher.
- More detergent is needed to get laundry clean. Clothes lose their brightness and whites go gray.
- The high concentration of minerals in hard water causes a lime scale buildup in household pipelines. This buildup of scale slows down water flow and could eventually clog the pipes altogether.
- This lime scale also builds up in household appliances such as water heaters and washing machines, dramatically reducing the life of these expensive items.
- Water with a high concentration of minerals is a poor conductor of heat, so energy consumption in areas with hard water is much higher. Electric and gas heaters can consume up to 30% more than in soft water areas.

What Makes Water Hard? |
What is hard water? Water is hard when it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. You may see staining on your sinks, tubs, showers, and clothing, build-up on your glassware, and even damage due to scale in your pipes and appliances. You may also notice less lather from your shampoos and soaps and even a feeling of film on your skin. All these are symptoms of the need for softened water. Water is softened or conditioned by replacing hard ions like calcium and magnesium with softer sodium or potassium ions. Water conditioners/softeners must be regenerated regularly, renewing their ability to remove hardness from water. Time-initiated or solid state conditioners regenerate at a fixed time when their softening capacity is predicted to be low. Demand-initiated conditioners regenerate automatically when they sense their capacity is low. A couple of ways for you to find out how hard your water is, would be to have it tested locally at your local public health department, or you can call us and we will gladly test it for you free, even if you decide to purchase your conditioner/softener elsewhere! We will test your sample for hardness, Iron, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and chlorine, and give you the results on the spot.
Soft water greatly reduces the scaling of pipes, faucets, and bath fixtures, and reduces spotting of glasses, dishes and flatware. Soft water also helps detergent clean your clothes better, while making your clothes last longer too! You can reduce your laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, hand soap and shampoo to half what you would normally use, not to mention soft water is much more pleasant to wash with, leaving less soap scum on you, and your tub/shower. Why should hard water concern me? For many uses, it would not matter. For instance, to put out fires, water your lawn, wash the mud off the streets or float your boat, water would have to be pretty hard to cause a problem. But for bathing, washing dishes and clothes, shaving, washing your car and many other uses of water, hard water is not as efficient or convenient as "soft water." For instance, you use only 1/2 as much soap cleaning with conditioned/soft water because hard water and soap combine to form "soap scum" that can't be rinsed off, forming a bathtub ring on all surfaces and dries leaving unsightly spots on your dishes. When hard water is heated, the hardness minerals are re-crystallized to form hardness scale. This scale can plug your pipes and hot water heater, causing premature failure, necessitating costly replacement. Soap scum remains on your skin even after rinsing, clogging the pores of your skin and coating every hair on your body. This crud can serve as a home for bacteria, causing diaper rash, minor skin irritation and skin that continually itches. For many industrial uses, the hardness minerals interfere with the process, causing inferior product. Contact PWC For further query. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
